Finn-Werften / Finn-Shipyards

ab ca.
1950 - AB Dalabatar, Sweden

1956 - Fairey Marine, England, Hamble near Southhampton,
About 40 Fairey Finns are listed in the Swedish Finnregistry since 1956.
During the 1950s Fairey Marine was the biggest boat builder in the Europe, with production volumes regularly exceeding 30 boats per week.

"Fairey Marine started producing Finns in about 1955 and produced over 100 until production ceased in 1963/4. They were usually built of three diagonal layers of birch veneers and baked in an oven to set the glue. The hulls were very resistant to rotting and so quite a few survive. Fairey also made rolled side tanks by the same process but also many bare hulls were sold to other builders or amateurs so there are some variations in deck and tank arrangements. Some of these others have buoyancy bags, others built in tanks. Also some hulls were finished and registered long after Fairey ceased production."

195x - Vötterl, Germany, Starnberger See

1961 - Carlsson, Sweden

1961 - Pearsson Brothers, England, Ford near LIttlehampton in West Sussex on the South Coast of the UK,
The UK register has over 100 Pearsons registered between 1961 and 1973. Almost all in GRP. They were thought to be fast in the times of Bob Fisher and Jack Knights but things ave moved on a pace since then. They were, however, well built and i think some have survived the test of time.

The first reference I found to Pearson Finns was in the April 1963 edition of Finn Fare
Pearson Bros, Ltd River Rd Littlehampton, Sussex England
Complete Hull less sails $612
They appeared to build boats until the early 70's.
Source: Dave Branch

Pearson were the "bread and butter" builder of glass fibre club level Finns from 1962 until they stopped building Finns, with their last being about 19 73. Never really considered by the Olympic aspirants they never the less were a reliable and popular club racing dinghy. Most had built in side tanks with a few variations in deck and tank arrangements over the years. During the late 60s and early 70s a fleet of Pearson Finns were used by Dunhill for the popular Finn Finder events, aiming to recognise emerging talent from club racers.

1960 - Newport Boats, USA

Elvstrom Finns were among the first glass-fibre Finns and quite a few were imported into the UK in the 60s. They were originally very competitive and remained successful at club level well into the 70s.

1961 - HVM, Holland
The HVM-Finn was mouldet from the successfull wooden hull of Andre Nelis. (The V stands for Vlieger who later started building Finns of their own.)
After the Gold Cup 1961 many sailors ordered new GRP boats from HVM (Holland) or Elvstrom (Denmark.)
1962. Andre Nelis remained also second behind Paul in the development of the HVM Finn. However the US built Newport Finns were said to be the fastest boats. Of the 133 boats at the Gold Cup 50 were made of plastic.

196x - Vlieger, Holland
see HVM.
Foeke Vliegers Finn "has a narrow slot of about 20 cm width leading from the cockpit to tile mast step which houses all the control lines.
Thus the Vlieger had a huge volume perfectly sealed in the front section.
The problem with the Vlieger Finn is that Mark Neelemann, who promoted that boat for a while, switched back to his collection of soft Lanaverres.."

19xx - DOUZE, Niederlande

Douze (Utrecht) hat nur 19 Stück angefertigt.

19xx - Butler Mouldings, England (Gowerton near Swansea, Wales)
Image

Butler built a few Finns in 1967 and 1968 but never in large numbers. They were similar to the Pearson Finns but probably slightly more competitive, again at club level.

19xx - Walker, England, Built by Anthony Walker and Ted Funnel at Mengham on Hayling Island near to Portsmouth, Glass hulls and wood decks - they used the Newport mould for the hull. Truly amateur builders!

19xx - Warwick, England

The 1967 Gold Cup was the climax of Chief Measurer Vernon Forster's rale of horror. He discovered the secret of the fast Raudaschl wooden hulls, ruling out a hollow keel section at station 1. Even Willy Kuhweide had to plane down the aft section of his 'Darling'. However this did not prevent him from winning the Gold Cup for the third time.

19xx - Roga, Spain, Barcelona

1973 10 Boote
1974 1
1979 3 G 1679, 1680, 1719

1984 3 G 1868, 1873, 18??
1985 4 G 1879, 1880, 1881, M 7

Die Rümpfe waren in GFK, Deck in Sperrholz, Plichtboden teils GFK oder Sperrholz.

19xx - Bootswerft Rüdiger Schneidereit, Hamburg baute ebenfalls Finns.

"Peter Taylor at Salcombe produced very good wooden Finns and was the first to produce a double bottomed Finn in 1972. Taylor glass fibre Finns were very successful, dominating the 1976 Gold Cup and world competition accounting for almost all Finns registered in Britain from 1979 until 1993."

1975 - Vanguard, USA, 1975 Vanguard 420 and Finn go into production.
1984 Vanguard supplies Finns to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
1992 Vanguard supplies 45 Finns to the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
Source: http://www.teamvanguard.com/2005/base/index.asp

"Vanguard Finns were produced by the Harken brothers, initially with wooden floors and then with double bottoms. Several designs were produced, all more successful than the previous but the boundaries were blurred by conversion kits to update earlier boats. Many Vanguard Finns were imported to the UK since they were the dominant builder for many years. Vanguards also seem to have also started the trend for Finns to be re-registered in several different countries as they changed hands."

19xx - 1991 Schreiber:

19xx - Abbott, Canada, has build Lemieux finns, but also their own designs. One of them was until 2004 one of the fastest of the Loosdrecht fleet and won many races.
Source: Boudewijn
The Lemieux Finn is known throughout the Finn world as one of the fastest designs around. Larry Lemieux has now teamed up with the Pata boatyard to create the Pata Lemieux Finn, a superb design built to the highest possible standards by Pata. The Pata Lemieux is a highly competitive Finn built to last

1993 - Devoti, England, Devoti built or prepared boats have won 13 Olympic Medals over the last 3 Olympic games.
The Devoti Finn has completely dominated the Finn racing scene since its launch in 1993 winning all major championships. The Devoti Finn was the official hull supplied in the Atlanta Olympics Savannah 1996, and has been raced by the majority of campaigners for the 2000 Olympics.
The current DBF mould, which was first produced in early 2002,
http://www.devotisailing.com

"In 1993 Devoti Finns ended the domination of Vanguard and took over until very recently when again, for the first time in very many years competitive Finns are available from a number of builders."

19xx - Wilke, Swiss
The company has been founded by Yvonne and Christoph Wilke in 1985. The first yard was situated in Faulensee on the lake of Thun in the beautiful Berner Oberland. Since 1993 the yard is situated in Leissigen just a few miles from the old location.
The yard focused originally on the building of Oneoff lakeracers as well as the maintenance of existing craft on the lake. Following the worldwide success in the building of Int. 5.5m yachts, and Finn-masts, the focus has been moved towards high-performance composite construction, and the overhaul and repair work became less important

The hulls of the Wilke Finndinghies are all laminated with a high performance epoxy-resin (SP), reinforced with orientated Glass, and where allowed Carbon fibres. All parts are vacuum consolidated and postcured. The centerboard is a CNC-machined Aluminium pate with an optimised weight distribution and hydrodynamic shape. The Rudder is a carbon/herex Sandwich spar built by Wilke Swiss Marine Composites.
