An International Jury has decided Team Holcim-PRB is entitled to redress for Leg 1.
Holcim-PRB’s finishing position in Leg 1 will be equal to its average finishing position at the finish of legs 2 to 5 of The Ocean Race Europe.
The team had been forced to retire from Leg 1 of The Ocean Race Europe after a collision with Allagrande Mapei Racing.
Both boats retired after the contact which came in the moments after the start of the race in Kiel, Germany two weeks ago.
The Jury said no further penalties would be imposed on either team (beyond retiring from the opening stage) but that Holcim-PRB should be given redress (ie.scoring points for leg 1) for being knocked out of the leg.
“We’re pleased with the Jury decision, which will allow us to score points for leg 1 that fairly reflect the performance of the team over the course of the full race,” said Alan Roberts, who represented the team in the hearing.
The points awarded for leg 1 will start to apply on the leaderboard following the result of the next leg into Nice, allowing for more racing to provide an accurate gauge of the team’s performance. Their leg 1 score will be updated following each leg, as more racing feeds into the average. There is no redress for the scoring gate in leg 1 and no points earned in the remaining scoring gates will impact the redress awarded.
“This has been an important decision as it frees us up for the rest of the event to focus on our sailing and achieving the best performance on the water,“ Roberts added.
“The whole process has been hard on ourselves and Allagrande Mapei Racing too I’m sure, and we’re pleased to be getting out of the Jury room and back on the water.”
Both sailors said they were eager to focus on the racing to come.
“The Jury decided not to grant us redress. We respect their ruling, even if it’s not the outcome we were hoping for. That’s part of our sport, and we accept it,” said Ambrogio Beccaria, the skipper of Allagrande Mapei Racing.
“This was a tough situation for both teams. Our energy is now directed toward the race itself. There are still three important legs ahead on the way to Montenegro.”
